Troop 77 - New Building Planning Process

  • After obtaining quotes from three different log building companies, the total was significantly more than we thought practical, even when we factored in the possibility of reduced, discount prices for materials and donated labor.
  • We then began to scale back the size of the building rather than change the materials we had selected: Logs; timber trusses; metal roof; full basement for storage; etc.
In the fall of 2001, we opened discussions with a new log building supplier: Fireside Log Homes in Elijay, GA. This contact was initiated by Jackie Whitmire, who had talked to Fireside while looking for a log home supplier for his own new home. Fireside had helped build the Scout Building in Elijay, and it was felt that we could get a reasonable price discount from Fireside.
  • Fireside offers a construction option called "Tongue & Groove Stack Chink". This style is becoming very popular throughout the log building industry as it is a bit more economical than the long length log system. This system can also be hewn on exterior with chinking joint groove to give the appearance of classic chinking without the attendant labor and maintenance problems. (construction diagram)
  • Interior construction will be log or T&G walls. Roof system will be heavy timber truss to provide a more "outdoors" environment. (sample1, sample2)
  • Exterior will be log, metal roof, with a porch front.
  • Foundation will be a full basement for equipment and vehicle storage made of poured, re-enforced concrete. Basement access will be by stairs from the main floor and roll-up garage door(s) from basement level.
