Rev. Don Thrasher

The Rev. Don Thrasher has served as our Minister of Congregational Life here at Toccoa First UMC since February 1, 2015.  Don is an ordained Deacon in Full Connection and  a certified Christian Educator in the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with a focus on  Life Span Studies from Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia and has a Master of Theology degree with a focus on Local Church Ministry from the Perkins School of Theology of Southern Methodist University in Dallas,Texas.

He has served on staff in churches in the North Georgia Conference (including University Heights UMC in Decatur, Briarcliff UMC in Atlanta, and Harmony Grove UMC in Lilburn) and in the South Carolina Conference (United Methodist Church of the Covenant in Spartanburg and Washington Street UMC in Columbia). He has also served on staff at the Cokesbury Bookstore in Decatur for a number of years where he was in charge of the Christian Education and Curriculum Sections.

As Minister of Congregational Life, Don works with the Invite, Nurture, Grow, and Serve Teams of our WINGS Council, resources the Children and Adult age levels, assists in our worship services, assists with homebound and hospital visitation, and serves in Communications as the editor of program brochures, the weekly Sunday School newsletter, and serves as the Website Administrator of our church.  He loves to help congregations to discern, pursue, and implement God's dreams for the churches.  He also  loves to plan programs and retreats of all kinds (including our new Wesley Heritage Reteats).

Don grew up in Decatur.  He is one of five children and has a fraternal twin brother who is an Elder in Full Connection in the North Georgia Conference.  Don's hobbies include walking, reading, traveling, and writing.   He is the author of "Moments Along a Journey of Faith"(Providence House, 2002).  Since 2009, he has had a devotional based Facebook page with "Faith Lifts" (Music videos from Sunday through Thursday). In 2014, he added "Faith Moments" (weekly Facebook devotional post). Both can now also be seen on Twitter and Linkedin. 

Don is a member of both the North Georgia and National Christians Engaged in Faith Formation (formerly Christian Educators Fellowship) as well as a member of  the Order of Deacons in the North Georgia Conference.  From 2006-2016, Don served the Conference as the Registrar for Those Certified in Specialized Ministries in the United Methodist Church. In 2016, he  became a member of the United Methodist Association of Communicators.

Don is excited to be serving God here on staff at Toccoa First.  He is also has become involved in the Toccoa Community.  When he was in high school in Decatur, Don was an active member and leader (Treasurer and then Co-President) in Decatur High School's Key Club (which is the youth equivalent of the Kiwanis Club (community service organization).  In April of 2015, Don joined and became an active member of the Toccoa Kiwanis Club.   Don is currently serving as  President-elect of this organization for the 2016-2017 term. He is also now serving as a member of the Advisory Committee for The Toccoa Record (the city's weekly newspaper).
